![]() Jayden and Jackson Besford are celebrating another successful basketball tournament after their squad, the Horsham Hornets, finished sixth in the state. The under-14 squad travelled to Ballarat to compete in the Victorian State Championships Gold Star Classic last weekend after competing in several tournaments around the state, working up from division seven to division three. The Hornets lost to Maffra, 52 points to 30. Bendigo won the competition over 31 other teams and will play in the Australian Championships in Western Australia. Jayden and Jackson, aged 12 and 11 respectively, have been enjoying their basketball careers since beginning in the local competition aged five. After success in the selection process, they have now completed three seasons with the Horsham Hornets Squad. This requires them to train every Sunday, play a practice match on Mondays, play a domestic game on Wednesdays, and also travel for regular tournaments. Jayden was voted the most valuable player in the local competition, as well as in the domestic Horsham competition. He is also participating in the VSquad programme, which is a three-year football development programme that includes two three-day camps a year and weekly requirements that are completed online. Run by AFL life member Rohan Smith, who played over 300 games for the Western Bulldogs and is a recipient of the EJ Whitten Medal, the squad is a pathway to an AFL career. Jayden had tried out for the under 12 Victorian team, and Jackson has been nominated for the try-outs, which will be conducted next month. Around 30 children have been nominated, from which four positions will be filled. Although running a tight schedule to fit in trainings and matches for both football and basketball, along with school, both boys are enjoying their sports.
