Perfect conditions greeted players and spectators for the 2013-14 Dimboola and District Tennis Association Grand Final at the DMSC Health and Fitness Centre on Saturday.

The reigning premiers Yaapeet, gunning for a fourth consecutive flag, took in the underdog tag against the red hot favourites Antwerp - a team desperate to end a 19-year premiership drought.

The favourites flexed their muscles and took an early three sets to love lead and from this position it looked like the Antwerp fairy tale was going to script but the underdogs from the Southern Mallee were not about to just lie down and accept the runner up trophy they bounced back to claim the next two sets and breath fresh life into the premiership decider.

Penny Fisher was too strong for Antwerps Abbey Greig winning nine games to two and Mickey Miller complete a singles clean sweep for Yaapeet by defeating Tim Jorgensen in a close encounter nine games to seven. The Antwerp lead had been reduced from three to one by some hard fought tennis from the Yaapeet team.

When the experienced Antwerp duo of Don Clark and Heather Jorgensen defeated Les and Ros Jones nine games to two the lead was again back out to two sets, this win claimed the mixed point but in finals this countered for nothing as each team was only looking forward to being the first to team to win 10 sets and get their hands premiership trophy.

Yaapeet was able to pull one set back when Ian and Sheryl Herben defeated Nathan Albrecht and Lucinda Newton nine games to five this was the last set of mixed doubles section and going into the mens and ladies sections the scoreboard read Antwerp four Yaapeet three the day was then set up for a great final and potentially a close finish.

Antwerp went out to a five sets to three lead when Chris Avery and Nathan Jorgensen defeated Joel Boehm and Josh Ey nine games to one and things seemed to be traveling well for the favourites but the Yaapeet ladies and other ideas, Chloe Welch and Penny Fisher proved too strong for Tahlia Williams and Heather Jorgensen winning nine games to six and reduced Antwerps lead back to one set.

The first tie break set of the day was played out between Daniel Greig and Don Clark against Yaapeets veteran team of Ian Herben and Marc Edelsten and it was a set that Yaapeet so desperately wanted but it was not to be, the Antwerp pair claimed the tie break seven points to three and extended the lead back out to two, six sets to four.

Again the Yaapeet ladies where showing their strength and got the score line back to six five when Leslie Robinson and Sheryl Herben defeated Kellie Laverty and Lucinda Newton, they fought back from a three game to seven deficit to win the set nine games to seven this not only took Yaapeet back to within one of the premiership favourites it provided the underdogs with a belief that they could cause and upset and it put some doubt in the minds of the Antwerp team.

A few nervous minutes then greeted the Antwerp team after the Yaapeet victory but the challenge was short lived when the experience team of Tim Jorgensen and Chris Avery defeated Josh Ey and Mickey Miller nine games to three the score was seven sets Antwerp five sets Yaapeet.

It was the turning point in the match Antwerp said enough was enough they settled their nerves and took control of the situation they edge closer to their first premiership in 19 years when Don Clark and Nathan Albrecht defeated Ian Herben and Les Jones nine games to six and when the marathon set was won nine games to seven by Tahlia Williams and Abbey Greig over Penny Fisher and Ros Jones the end of Antwerps drought was near, only one set was required to lay claim to the 2013-14 title.

The Antwerp team did not have to wait long as the next set off was won by the Jorgensen brothers who teamed up to win the vital 10th set nine games to one and then it was party time for the premiership favourites. This win took Antwerp to a unbeatable position leading Yaapeet 10 sets to five, the drought was over and they celebrations began.

The two sets that were still in progress when the results was put beyond doubt were completed and they also went Antwerps way, the men's set gave Antwerp all six and the final ladies set saw Lucinda Newton and Samantha Baker put the icing on the premiership cake winning in a tie break over Lesley Robinson and Gina Boehm giving them a seven set Grand Final victory, both clubs agreed not to play the remaining two sets.

After being challenged early by Yaapeet and having a few nervous moments Antwerp then went on a six set to love winning streak and claimed the 2013-14 premiership title 12 sets to five and end Yaapeets three year hold on the title.

The Antwerp team responded to a request by their respected leader Heather Jorgensen who at the start of the year asked each member to commit to their summer sport as in past years the commitment had not been there and the full potential of this team had not been seen.

The challenge set down by Jorgensen was accepted by the entire team and the results throughout the year showed as they finishing the home and way season way out in front of all challengers and when it turned to finals they found another gear and where able to comfortably take care of their opponents to claim the title Jorgensen and the entire Antwerp team so desperately wanted, the 2013-14 premiership was Antwerps.
