The Nationals Member for Lowan Hugh Delahunty said the Victorian Coalition Government is providing $165,000 from the $1 billion Regional Growth Fund to expand and redevelop the historic Menzies Square in Jeparit.

"The Menzies Square project would redevelop the vacant blocks where two shops burned down about two years ago. Jeparit is proud to celebrate its heritage of being the birthplace and home of Sir Robert Menzies, Australias longest-serving Prime Minister," Mr Delahunty said.

"The historic site of Menzies Square is where Sir Roberts parents owned a store and house, and where he was born in 1894.

"While limited in size, the square is enjoyed by both local residents and visitors," Mr Delahunty said.

Nationals candidate for Lowan Emma Kealy said this project will expand the square to create a larger and more usable space for residents and visitors.

"Revitalising the square will involve developing new and improved infrastructure, including a large outdoor chess set featuring Australian Prime Ministers and Menzies-era politicians."

"The redevelopment will bring a greater number of visitors to the town and form a critical component of Hindmarsh regions tourism industry," Ms Kealy said.

Mr Delahunty said in addition to the outdoor chessboard the project would include landscaping, raised garden beds and community herb garden, installing a play space featuring a replica storefront and interactive educational activities, creating a new driveway and parking facilities, and installing a visitor information board, promoting local attractions.

"These new features will provide a place for the community and tourists to meet, socialise and learn about Australias political history.

"The Victorian Coalition Government funding towards the $235,000 Menzies Square project will be provided through the Regional Growth Fund to Hindmarsh Shire Council, with the Menzies Foundation contributing $35,000, Federation University contributing $20,000, and Council contributing $15,000," Mr Delahunty said.

"The Regional Growth Fund invests in community-led projects to drive jobs, investment and innovation in rural and regional Victoria," Mr Delahunty said.

In Hindmarsh, the Regional Growth Fund has provided $4.2 million to 19 projects, leveraging $11.3 million in total investment. These projects include $65,000 for the $1 million Rainbow Recreation Reserve Community Facility redevelopment; $220,000 for the $416,700 Dimboola Streetscapes project; and $1.7 million for the $7.1 million Yaapeet Line Grain Development project.

This project is expected to be completed in July 2015.
