A key road link between Jeparit and the region is set to receive a vital upgrade, with works on the Nhill-Jeparit Road bridge to commence next month.

The $900,000 project will commence on Monday 30 January and involves strengthening the bridge deck and upgrading the safety barriers to provide a safer route for residents and industry.

Set to be completed by June 2017, the upgrades will extend the service life of the bridge.

VicRoads Regional Director Ewen Nevett said that these works will allow the bridge to operate well into the future.

"Strengthening works allow the bridge to operate without the need for a load limit for heavy vehicles in the future, allowing local freight to be transported efficiently to domestic and international markets," he said.

To ensure the safety of road users and road workers, there will be lane closures and traffic signals in place to ensure that vehicles travel safely through the area.

During construction a 3.2m vehicle width restriction shall apply. The recommended detour for wider vehicles is via Dimboola using the Western Highway and Dimboola - Rainbow Road.

"Drivers need to be alert and remember the changed traffic conditions when travelling in the area and to be mindful of road workers," Mr Nevett said.

An average of 410 vehicles use the bridge daily which is on the key route between Nhill and Jeparit and is the only western entrance to the town. It forms part of one of two primary routes between the town and the Western Highway and supports local industry as they transport their product across the state.

The upgrade is part of the $35.8 million Stronger Country Bridges Program, which targets bridges along major regional freight corridors.
