Hindmarsh Shire public holidays confirmed
Hindmarsh Shire Council has received confirmation that its request to substitute show days for the 2017 Melbourne Cup Day public holiday in two of the Shire’s townships has been granted.

Following the practice of the last couple of years, Hindmarsh Shire Council requested that both Nhill and Rainbow districts substitute their annual agricultural shows, both held midweek, for the Melbourne Cup public holiday.

In 2017, Nhill and district will have Thursday 19 October 2017 as a public holiday, coinciding with the Nhill Agricultural and Pastoral Society Show Day. Rainbow and district will have their holiday on Tuesday 17 October 2017 to celebrate the Rainbow Agricultural and Pastoral Society Show Day.

Dimboola and Jeparit districts will retain Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday 7 November 2017, as a Public Holiday as their shows are on a weekend.

Dimboola A & P Society Show Day is scheduled for Saturday 21 October 2017, and the Jeparit show will be celebrated the following day on Sunday 22 October 2017.

“This is a great opportunity for Hindmarsh residents to fully enjoy the experience of their local show, and appreciate the planning and preparation of the respective A & P Societies in each town” says Hindmarsh Shire Council Mayor Debra Nelson. “It’s great to have the ability to be flexible with the Melbourne Cup public holiday. It allows us to recognise the special days in our own local communities. It’s great to enable the schools and workers from the local towns to be able to have the day off and support their local show”.

Hindmarsh Shire Council adopted the Dimboola Community Precinct Plans in September 2016 and is now inviting community feedback on a proposed amendment.

In September 2017, it will be 100 years since the sons of Edwin and Polly were killed in the First World War, only 4 days apart.

To commemorate this event, on Sunday 24th of September 2017, a service will be held at the Dimboola Cemetery.
