The publication of Fire Danger Rating forecasts has commenced two weeks earlier than usual as another bushfire season approaches.

The Fire Danger Rating (FDR) calculations are usually published by the Bureau of Meteorology from 1 November to 30 April each year, but with drying conditions and the commencement of the Fire Danger Period for two municipalities in the east of the state, an earlier start to the forecasts has been justified.

Members of the public along with CFA staff and volunteers, are encouraged to make themselves familiar with this rating system which gives an indication as to the potential risk of fire starting and how difficult a fire will be to control.

Forecasts indicate that this summer could be an above average bushfire season, and all Victorians are encouraged to have a fire plan to suit their individual circumstances, and for those who do not currently have a plan in place, now is the time to formulate one.

The FDR forecasts are available via the CFA website, Vic Emergency website, Vic Emergency app, FDR data feeds and roadside automated FDR signs.

These ratings are determined by factoring in weather forecast data and other environmental conditions such as fuel load and curing.

More information about the Fire Danger Ratings and what each rating means can be found on the CFA website.
