A special presentation was made at the Dimboola Memorial Secondary College on Monday morning when the first ever Ackland Award was presented to Year 12 student Tristan Rayes.

This award was created by John and Keryn Ackland to support indigenous students in the Wimmera to complete their final years at school, with the principles behind the award being:
  • Achievement
  • Commitment
  • Knowledge
  • Leadership
  • Award
  • Nyerna, which is a Wergaia word for "to hear, to listen"
  • Dedication

The award was presented by Nola Illin, Koorie Education Support Officer, DET, on behalf of John and Keryn Ackland during the College assembly. Also present to witness the presentation were Tristan's parents, Aunt and Uncle from South Australia and representatives from the Wimmera DET, Koorie Workforce Team and other visitors.

Tristan Rayes is one of DMSC's 2018 School Captains and is a proud Aboriginal student.

DMSC Principal Anne Gawith said that Tristan is an excellent role model for his peers and for the other indigenous students at the College.

"The school is very proud of Tristan, he has a warm personality and impeccable manners."

Tristan is passionate about pursuing a career in the hospitality industry as a chef.
