The Driver Reviver Pit Stop crew will be at the Lochiel wayside stop just out of Dimboola again this Queens Birthday long weekend.

Today and tomorrow they will be present with free barista coffee and games and giveaways for the kids, along with the Dimboola Lions Clubs volunteers who will be offering the usual tea, coffee and snacks to encourage drivers to stop, rest and refresh, in an effort to ensure they arrive safely at their destination.

The Lochiel stop is one of five Driver Reviver Pit Stop locations that will be in operation around Victoria this weekend, in addition to fourteen other regular Driver Reviver stops

The Driver Reviver program, which is supported by logistics company TOLL, is a national campaign with the objective of reducing road collisions by alleviating driver fatigue

Drivers are urged to plan their trip and aim to get enough quality sleep before driving, regardless of whether the trip is a long or short one. A healthy adult needs on average between seven and nine hours of sleep to function properly.

If feeling drowsy whist already on the road, the best option is to pull over safely and have a 15-minute power nap.

If any of these signs of fatigue are experienced when driving, the recommendation is to pullover for a break:

  • Trouble remembering the last few kilometres driven; missing exits or traffic signs
  • Drifting from your lane, tailgating, hitting a shoulder rumble strip or difficulty maintaining a consistent, correct speed
  • Seeking stimulation to remain awake, like winding down the window or turning up the radio
  • Feeling sleepy
  • Frequent blinking, heavy eyelids or slow blinking
  • Eyes closing or going out of focus
  • Yawning, feeling restless and rubbing your eyes
  • Trouble keeping your head up or head nodding is a sign of severe drowsiness
  • The tendency to doze off when not active for a while; for example, when waiting in your car at the lights
