None of the local cricket teams enjoyed ultimate success in the opening round of the Horsham Cricket Association A and B grade competitions on Saturday.
Playing their debut games in this competition, the two new West Wimmera Warriors teams lost to Homers and Colts in the A and B grades respectively, and the Blackheath-Dimboola B grade team finished behind the Noradjuha Toolondo Bullants.
A Grade - West Wimmera Warriors 6 for 134 lost to Homers 5 for 136
The West Wimmera Warriors hosted Homers, the reigning A grade premiers, at Davis Park in Nhill and although they batted first and posted a credible 6 for 134 in their allocated 40 overs, their opponent comfortably passed this total for the loss of only 5 wickets in the 32nd over.
Brodie Cramer opened the innings and scored 51 and captain Michael Preston contributed 47, and Liam Preston was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 29, and Luke Smith and Cramer took one each.
B Grade - West Wimmera Warriors 9 for 96 lost to Colts 0 for 107
At Sir Robert Menzies Park in Jeparit the B grade Warriors also batted first and got off to a good start with openers Adrian King scoring 31 and Jamie Harding 27, but the only other to make double figures was Chris Heinrich who made 15 batting at number three.
After this the next best was Ruby James, playing her first senior game, who finished not out on 5 when at the end of their 40 over the Warriors had held on to make 9 for 96.
In reply the Colts’ openers were able to score the required runs with over ten overs to spare and with losing a wicket.
Ruby James was the pick of the bowlers, conceding less than two runs per over and finished with none for 7 off 4 overs at 1.75 runs per over.
B Grade - Dimboola-Blackheath 8 for 123 lost to Bullants 2 for 129
It was the middle order batsmen for Dimboola-Blackheath that allowed the team to score 8 for 123.
Daniel Polack made the top score of 35 and Elliot Braithwaite made 22, Peter Frecker 14 and Dwayne McDonald made 13 to contribute the bulk of the runs.
In reply the Noradjuha Toolondo Bullants only required 33 overs to score the required runs, with Harry Young and Sam Polack the only Dimboola-Blackheath bowlers to take wickets.
Next Week
The A grade Warriors will travel to play Laharum and in the B grade the Warriors make the trip to Murtoa to play Lubeck-Murtoa and Blackheath-Dimboola will take on Colts on Dudley Cornell Park in Horsham.
The Blackheath-Dimboola C grade team will have their first competitive hit for the season when they play Homers on the Holy Trinity College ground in Horsham.
