Cricket | Both Blackheath-Dimboola teams enjoy victory
Both of the Blackheath-Dimboola senior teams tasted victory on Saturday, with the B grade team completing an easy victory over Horsham Saints and the C grade team also scoring a win by defeating Horsham Saints in their round 7 clash.

B Grade

Going into the second day of their game against Horsham Saints on the Dimboola Recreation Reserve, the locals only needed to score 16 runs to earn a first innings victory after they restricted their opposition to 89 runs and had score 74 without the loss of a wicket by stumps on day one the previous week.

Not out batsmen Trent McGough (19) and Harry Young (45) both retired on their overnight scores giving Chris Hauselberger (31) and Nathan Schorback (19) the opportunity to score the winning runs and go onto get some valuable batting practice.

The top score for the innings was made by Elliot Braithwaite who remained not out on 52 when his captain declared the innings closed at 5 for 217. Sam Polack also contributed 22 to the total.

In their second innings, Horsham Saints fared a little better, finishing with a team total of 113, but this was still 15 runs short of the runs needed to force Blackheath-Dimboola to need to bat again.

This gave the Bulls an innings and 15 run outright victory and a valuable extra points which has seen them rise to second on the ladder.

Three bowlers shared the wickets in the second innings, with Dwayne McDonald taking 5 for 34, his best bowling return for the club, Braithwaite 3 for 21 and Robert Summers 2 for 38.

Next week the team will travel to Murtoa to take on the third placed Lubeck-Murtoa in a one day game, where the Bulls have the opportunity to draw further ahead and consolidate second spot with a win, but a loss would see their opponents rise above them on the ladder.

C Grade

The C grade Bulls registered their third win for the season, this time against Horsham Saints, with a comfortable three wicket win with nine overs to spare on the Secondary College oval. This established them firmly in the top four.

After being asked to bowl first by the visiting captain, four of the seven bowlers used shared the ten wickets, with Darren Sexton’s 3 for 15 and Malcolm Barry’s 3 for 32 being the standout performers.

Michael Henderson also impressed with 2 wickets for 6 runs off 6 overs, and Jason Pietsch took the other wicket to fall to a bowler, with Peter Frecker effecting a run out for the other wicket.

The Saints finished with a total of 134 from one ball less than their allotted overs, setting the Bulls a challenging target.

In the run chase, Blackheath-Dimboola started slowly with only 33 runs on the board when the fourth wicket fell, but a 47 run partnership between Frecker (16) and Archie Watt (38) for the fifth wicket and another 39 runs made by Watt and Sexton (20) took the team to within 15 of the target.

Although a further two wickets fell before the target was passed, by this point in their inning, the Bulls had over ten more overs available to make the required runs and they did so in the 31st over.

Jeff Cameron (11) and Pietsch (13) also contributed scores in double figures.

Next week the Bulls welcome Homers to ‘The Park’ and have the opportunity to confirm their credentials as a serious finals contender against the competiton’s current second ranked team.
