Both of the West Wimmera Warriors cricket teams played host to their counterparts from the Horsham Saints club, but enjoyed contrasting fortunes.

A Grade

On Davis Park in Nhill the A grade team took the opportunity to bat first in their one day match against Horsham Saints, but made a slow start when they lost three wickets for just two runs.

The loss of a further five wickets by the time the total had reached 38 brought Michael Preston and Adrian King together in a 35 run partnership that nearly doubled the team’s score. King was dismissed for 23 and Preston was the last man out for 25 to be the only Warriors, along with sundries with 19, to be the only ones to make scores in double figures.

When the innings came to an end the Warriors had only made 90.

The Saints made a solid start to their run chase with openers Mark Crafter (34), Gary Davidson (38) and Austin Smith (23) guiding their team past the required total, but their innings fell away quickly with the next best score being 5 by the last man out, Jonothan Carroll.

The leading bowlers for the Warriors were Jordan Gurry with 5 for 23 from 5.4 overs and Josh Lees who took 3 for 27.

Round twelve will see the A grade Warriors play their final one day game for the season, when they travel to Minyip to take on Rupanyup-Minyip where their hosts need the win to cement a place in the top four, giving the Warriors the opportunity to influence the finals.

B Grade

The B grade team can go into the second day of their clash with Horsham Saints with some confidence, after dismissing their opponents for 143 and already having reduced the target by 18 runs for the loss of one wicket.

On Sir Robert Menzies Park in Jeparit the home captain, Trevor James, invited the visitors to bat first and a couple of early wickets to Peter Hedt vindicated this decision.

Although opener Corey Smith batted well to eventually register a half century with 52, his batting partners fell regularly at the other end with only three others making it into double figures.

The standout bowling performance was 5 for 34 by Dan Cross from 23 overs, whilst Trevor James took two and his daughter Ruby took the remaining wicket.

Above - Sharath Sunil bowled well on Saturday but was not rewarded with any wickets on this occasion.

Behind the stumps, wicket keeper Jamie Harding took two catches, as did Trevor James in the field and three others also held catches.

With ten overs to face at the end of the first day, the Warriors have reduced their target by 18 runs for the loss of just one wicket.

The equation for next week is to score another 126 runs without losing 9 wickets to win their first game for the season.
