The West Wimmera Warriors B grade team took their good early season form into their first two day game with an imposing first innings total of 346 on Saturday.
Taking the opportunity to bat first on the Coughlin Park pitch, the Warriors’ experienced an early setback when their in-form opening batsman, Mitch Dahlenburg, was dismissed with just 8 runs on the board. This would have lifted the spirits of the Saints players, considering that previously this season Dahlenburg has scored 358 runs in four innings, including 93 against the same opponent last weekend in a one day encounter.
Any hope that this early breakthrough would begin a batting collapse was dispelled with fellow opener Nathan Alexander (77) and Dylan Webb (15) combining for a 53 run partnership for the second wicket, and then Alexander and Josh Lees (99) added 72 for the third wicket.
The biggest partnership for the innings was made by Lees (pictured above in action earlier this season) and Aaron Cramer (69) who made 119 together to take the team score past 250.
A few late wickets slowed the scoring, but a contribution of 51 not out by Ben Pollock and 20 by Luke Smith late in the innings took the total to 346 by the end of the allotted 70 overs for the loss of eight wickets.
Next Saturday the Warriors will return to Coughlin Park to defend this total and their undefeated record so far this season.
The C grade team had the bye this round and will travel to Lubeck to take on Lubeck-Murtoa in a T20 game next Saturday afternoon.
