The West Wimmera Warriors started 2020 in the same form as they finished 2019, with a solid win in their first Twenty 20 match for the season to remain undefeated in all formats.

Two rounds of these games were played on Saturday, but the Warriors had a bye in the second of these and so only had to play one game for the day.

Upon winning the toss the Quantong captain chose to bat first but this did not prove to be productive when the Warriors’ opening bowler Josh Lees had one of Quantong’s opening batsmen caught by wicketkeeper Liam Albrecht with just four runs on the board with the fourth ball of the day.

A second-wicket partnership of 65 which took the innings into the thirteenth over and set the scene for Quantong to post a competitive total, but once this partnership was broken only one other combination made it into double figures and the last seven wickets fell for just 12 runs.

The last batsman was dismissed in the final over of the innings with the total on 103.

Nathan Alexander was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 12 off 4 overs, and Mitch Dahlenburg also took three wickets off his four overs. Lees finished with two wickets and Ash Dickinson and Jack Crowhurst took one each.

Alexander and Dahlenburg combined again to open the Warriors’ innings and did not waste any time attacking this target and had made half of the required runs off the first four overs.

Only ten overs were required to win the game without losing a wicket, with Alexander unbeaten on 77 and Dahlenburg not out on 27.

Next Saturday another two rounds of Twenty20 games will be played, with the Warriors taking on Rupanyup-Minyip at 1.15 pm on the Dimboola Road oval in Horsham, and then in a twilight match at Coughlan Park they will play Homers from 4.15 pm.

C Grade

There were no C grade games played this weekend as this competition resumes next Saturday with the last round of Twenty20 games.

Although the West Wimmera team has the bye and will not take to the field again until the following week against Lubeck-Murtoa at Davis Park, there will still be plenty of interest in the results this week.

The Warriors go into this round as one of three teams tied on points at the top of the ladder and will get six points from the bye, but will need either top team Laharum to lose to fifth-placed Lubeck-Murtoa, or second-placed Colts to be defeated by fourth-placed Horsham Saints, to guarantee a top-two finish and a place in the grand final.

A narrow win by Colts may still see their percentage drop by the 0.1 needed to allow the Warriors to move ahead of them even if they both finish on the same points.

Although the teams to contest the C grade Twenty20 grand final will be decided next Saturday, it will not be played until the middle of February.
