Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit continue to investigate a three-vehicle collision in Great Western that claimed the life of one person on Wednesday night.

It is believed a truck carrying multiple vehicles and a ute collided on the Western Highway just after 10pm, a second truck then crashed into the initial collision scene.

The yet to be identified male driver of the ute, and only occupant, died at the scene.

The driver of the truck carrying cars, a 50-year-old man from Lalor in Melbourne, has been taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries and will be interviewed at a later date.

The driver of the other truck, a 63-year-old man from Albion, was not injured and has been exonerated from any wrong-doing.

The exact cause of the collision is still being investigated.

The Highway re-opened on Wednesday afternoon with traffic management in place while the investigation and recovery continued. The Highway is now open as usual between Stawell and Ararat.
