The two senior West Wimmera Warriors cricket teams met with mixed results in round four of Horsham Cricket Association matches on Saturday, with a narrow loss by the A grade, but an emphatic win by the C grade team.
The A grade team travelled to Noradjuha, and when asked to bowl first restricted the home team to 5 for 194 from the allocated 40 overs.
The leading bowlers were Nathan Alexander and Austin Merrett who took two wickets each, and Josh Lees took the other one to fall. Although he did not take a wicket, Austin Smith was the most economical of the bowlers, conceding just 22 runs from his eight overs.
The Warriors’ reply came very close to victory, finishing 12 runs sort of the target at the end of their 40 overs.
Seven of the nine batsmen used made double-figure scores, with Austin Smith (52) and Mitchell Dahlenburg (34) combining to make the highest partnership of the innings of 49 runs for the second wicket. Trevor Polkinghorne was the other batsman to pass 20 when he contributed 22 runs.
The Warriors now have a two win-two loss record after four rounds which has them in third place on the ladder, behind Homers and Noradjuha Toolondo Bullants, and ahead of Rupanyup-Minyip making up the top four.
Next Saturday this team will take on Jung Tigers in a one day game on the Horsham City Oval.
The C grade team had the opportunity to play on the turf pitch at Coughlin Park in Horsham where they took on Horsham Saints in a one day game.
The home team batted first and was dismissed for 78 off 19.1 overs, with only one batsman making double figures.
Bailey Zimmermann dominated the Warriors’ bowling figures by taking five wickets for one run off 2.1 overs, and Xavier Bone took two wickets, and Jack Crowhurst, Lochlyn Hahne, and Alias Danaha all took one each.
The Warriors’ reply only needed 15 overs and two batsmen to pass the target, with opening batsmen Shane Gusman (36 not out) and Darcy Bullen (19 not out), with some help from 24 extras, comfortably scoring the runs to register the team’s third win from four games.
The Warriors now find themselves on the top of the C grade ladder, equal on points but with a superior percentage to Quantong and Colts. Laharum is fourth, ahead of Horsham Saints by percentage.
The C grade team has another long trip next Saturday when they travel to the foothills of the Grampians to play the home team on Laharum’s Cameron Oval.
