The penultimate round of matches in the Horsham Cricket Association saw both West Wimmera Warriors’ senior teams register wins, and the Under 16.5 team progress to the grand final.

After the trip to Minyip, the A grade Warriors were asked to bat first and set about building the foundations of a big score.

The usual opening combination put on 59 for the first wicket in 16 overs before Nathan Alexander was caught for 37, and Mitch Dahlenburg had made 65 before he was the second wicket to fall with the team total on 162 in the 34th over.

The innings top score was made by Brad Alexander, who fell for 73 in the second last over after combining with Austin Smith (22) in a third-wicket stand of 42, which took the total over two hundred.

Two further wickets fell on 204 in the attempt to score quickly, but this slowed the scoring in the closing overs, and when the last ball had been bowled, the total stood at 210 for the loss of five wickets.

The Rupanyup-Minyip batsmen made a determined start to the run chase putting on 55 runs for the first wicket and 81 for the third, but once their top scorer, Mark Mbofana (49), became the third wicket to fall, the mounting pressure from the Warriors bowlers and fieldsmen saw five more wickets fall for the addition of just thirty runs.

At the end of their allotted overs, the Panthers had scored 194, 16 runs short of their target.

Nathan Alexander followed up his batting contribution with three wickets, and Austin Smith took to be the bowlers to take multiple wickets in the innings. Austin Merrett and Henry Smith took one each, and Brad Alexander had a good day in the field, taking two catches and effecting a run out.

The home and away season comes to an end next weekend when the Warriors travel to Sunnyside in Horsham to take on Homers, with second place on the ladder going into the finals as the prize to the winner. Both teams are coming off strong wins, so this should be a top game and a fitting workout to prepare for the finals.

On Davis Park, the C grade Warriors completed their home and away season with a resounding 109 run victory over Laharum, which has boosted their percentage enough that they are now on top of the ladder, ahead of two other teams on the same points.

The Warriors now have to wait on other results to determine if they will remain there going into the finals as they have the bye next Saturday, but unless both Colts and Quantong register huge wins, they should finish first or second.

The Warriors were asked to bat first on Saturday, and with a couple of significant partnerships, set an imposing total for the visitors to chase.

Openers Dylan Webb retired on 50, and Liam Albrecht made 39, but Darcy Bullen (42 not out) and Tyson Mitchell (45) dominated the scorecard when they put on 102 for the third wicket. Lochlyn Hahne also contributed 15, and Alias Danaha 3 to the team total of 219.

Although Laharum survived their full forty overs and their batsmen put on 40 runs for the fourth wicket, the Warriors’ tight bowling prevented them from seriously challenging the target, with five wickets falling for 19 runs to finish their innings.

Liam Albrecht conceded two runs per over to take 3 for 12 off six overs, and Hahne finished with 2 for 11 off four overs, going at just 2.75 runs per over.

In his first visit to the bowling crease since round one, Darcy Bullen took his best figures for the Warriors with 2 for 7 off a miserly three overs.

Trevor James was the other successful bowler with 1 for 5 off two overs.

The C grade Warriors’ next games will be the semi-final on March 13, but their opponent will not be decided until after all results are known in the last round.

On Saturday morning, the Warriors’ Under 16.5 hosted the Dunmunkle Renegades on Davis Park in a semi-final to decide one of the two teams that will play off for the 2020/21 premiership.

Batting first, they made 7 for 78 off their 22 overs, to which the Renegades replied with 9 for 55 off their overs to give the home team a 23 run victory

Lochlyn Hahne made the innings high score of 30, with Lucas Cole (12) and Xavier Bone (11) also making significant contributions towards the Warriors’ total.

With the ball, Xavier Bone and Murphy Leach took two wickets each, and Lochlyn Hahne, Ruby James, Jobe Dickinson, and Brodie Foster took one each.

The Warriors now have the opportunity to take on Homers on the turf wicket at the Horsham City Oval on March 8 in the grand final.
