|For the second week in a row, the Wimmera’s hockey teams will do battle on the synthetic pitch at the Dimboola Health and Fitness Centre, and although it is only the fourth round and there is still a long way to go in the season, several important games are scheduled.
The three games in the Open division all have significance this week, with every team playing an opponent adjacent to them on the ladder.
The top two teams, the Yanac Tigers and Nhill Rangers, meet in the twilight game with the winner taking a clear lead on the ladder, and the other two teams that currently make up the top four, the Warrack Hoops and Kaniva Cobras, will both want a win when they clash to ensure they remain in the four and in touch with the leaders.
In the final game, the two teams yet to win a game this year, the Dimboola Burras and Horsham Hurricanes, will also be playing to stay within reach of those above them.
After their polished performance against the Hoops last week, it is difficult to tip against the Tigers, but form so far this season suggests that the other two games could go either way.
Another top-of-the-table clash in the Women’s division will be the feature game of the round, with both the Yanac Women and Nhill Thunderbirds showing good early season form to suggest this will be a close game. As with the equivalent clash in the Open division, the winner will take the outright lead on the ladder and the bragging rights against an opponent that could stand between them and the 2021 premiership.
Neither the Dimboola Roos nor the Horsham Jets have yet tasted victory this year, so a good performance in their clash in the late game under lights could get their season back on track. Both team’s squads feature several potential match-winning players, so a significant factor will be in the personnel each one puts on the field on Saturday evening.
In the first game of the round, the Kaniva Raiders and Warrack Revengers will both be keen to record their first win for the season, and the Nhill Leopards, refreshed after enjoying a week off with the bye last week, have the daunting task of taking on the undefeated Yanac Warriors.
Under 16 Development Program
The Under 16 Development Program will feature three games involving the next generation of Wimmera hockey players in the 12.30 time slot.
The Horsham Black Hawks play the Dimboola Kookaburras, the Kaniva Rampagers take on the Warrack Avengers, and the Nhill Bandits meet the Yanac Lowan Stars.
