Threatening skies overshadowed round two of the Horsham Cricket Association season, including the positive start to the West Wimmera Warriors C grade premiership defence, but all games were completed.

Both Warriors teams stepped out in their new uniforms for the first time, with shirts featuring the club’s colours of green and yellow, and the A grade team replacing the traditional white pants with green.

The A grade team came up against the strong Jung Tigers side on the Horsham City Oval on Saturday afternoon where batting first, they only just made it into triple figures when the last wicket fell with the score on 102 in the 34th of 40 overs.

Early wickets had the team struggling at 6 for 28, but an inning high of 37 by Tim Braendler, who came in at number seven, gave the innings some credibility, with partnerships of 34 with Luke Smith (18) for the seventh wicket and 31 with Austin Merrett (17).

Following some light rain during the innings break that almost had the covers deployed, the Tigers’ openers came out swinging, appearing determined to win the game before the next shower of rain.

An opening partnership of 71 in quick time took the game away from the Warriors, with Tigers’ opening batsman Brett Jensz scoring 53 off just 44 balls, and they passed the target in the 16th over without losing another wicket.

Luke Smith was the only wicket-taker in the innings.

After having the bye in the first round, the C grade Warriors scored a comfortable win over Colts on the turf pitch at Dudley Cornell Park in Horsham in their first match for the season.

The Colts’ captain elected to bat after winning the toss, and some tight Warriors’ bowling saw only two batsmen reach double figures, and the team only make 75 for the loss of nine wickets in their twenty overs.

Two wickets each to Jarryd Dahlenburg and Wallace Wheaton dominated the bowling card, with Bailey Zimmermann, Darcey Bullen, Lochlyn Hahne, and Kyle Kuchel taking one each, and Drew Schneider effected a run-out to take the final wicket.

With rain threatening, it only took sixteen overs and the loss of four wickets to overhaul their target, with Hahne making the inning-high score of 23, and Tyson Mitchell (18), and Bailey Zimmermann (12) contributing the bulk of the runs.

Next week, the A grade again travel to Horsham to take on Homers on the Sunnyside ground, with both teams still looking for their first win of the season, and the C grade team will host their first home game when they welcome Laharum to Davis Park for a Twenty20 match.
