The Blackheath-Dimboola Bulls senior teams stepped out in their new uniforms on Saturday and christened them with two solid wins.

The B grade team, playing on the turf pitch on the main oval, fielded first against Laharum, who started strongly, having 51 on the board before Elliot Braithwaite made the first breakthrough. Brodie Cramer took the second wicket with Laharum’s total on 73, and another useful partnership took them to just over one hundred before Sam Polack took the third wicket.

Even their fourth-wicket partnership of 21 kept the scoreboard ticking over until Brenden Marrs took his first wicket with the total at 122.

This was the start of a collapse that saw them lose seven wickets for seven runs to end the innings.
Marrs took six of these, and Robert Somers took the other to dismiss Laharum for 129 off 36.4 overs.

Marrs (above) finished with 6 for 23 off 7.4 overs to be the best of the bowlers.

The run chase did not start confidently, with the Bulls losing two wickets before the team reached double figures, but when the third wicket fell at 33, Braithwaite joined Cramer, and they put on 74 for the fourth wicket to keep the Bulls in the game.

Although Braithwaite fell for 29 when the team was still 22 short of the target, Cramer ushered the team past Laharum’s total and finished unbeaten on 73, taking his season tally to 128 runs from the first three games.

The second-placed Bulls will be looking to continue their unbeaten start to the season when they take on the third-placed Jung Tigers on the Horsham College Dimboola Road Oval next Saturday. With the first-placed Colts playing fourth-placed Horsham Saints across town at Dudley Cornell Park, the leading two teams have the opportunity to draw a couple of wins ahead of the rest of the field by the end of the fourth round.

Next door on the Les Howland Oval, the C grade team took on Colts and finished with a comfortable 27 run victory.

Four batters contributed double-figure scores to the team’s total of 6 for 129 off their twenty overs, with captain Steven Glover contributing 28 in his first visit to the crease this season, and Archer Laverty added to his 20 in the previous game with 24.

Openers Luke Hutchinson and Luke Searle both made 22, and Isobelle Schorback contributed 12 to a 36 run partnership with Glover for the sixth wicket.

Opening bowler Ava Clark took the first three wickets of the Colts’ reply, reducing them to three for 29, and despite several significant partnerships later in the innings, they never fully recovered from this start and finished 27 runs short of the target.

Clark finished with the impressive figures of 3 wickets for just 7 runs from three overs, and Laverty, Glover and James Barry all took one wicket each.

With their second win from three matches, the Bulls are in fourth place on the ladder and have the chance to consolidate their position in the top four when they travel to Lubeck to take on the winless Mudlarks next Saturday.
