A half-century by Liam Albrecht dominated the West Wimmera Warriors’ scorecard in their win over Horsham Saints Red in the latest round of the Horsham Cricket Association C grade competition.
The Saints’ captain chose to bat first upon winning the toss, which looked to be a wise decision after his opening batsmen put 54 runs on the board before the fall of the first wicket, and even at three wickets down for 75, they were looking at setting a challenging target.
Some tight bowling and smart fielding kept the Warriors in the game, and when the fourth wicket fell with the total on 84, it sparked a collapse that saw the Saints lose their last seven wickets for just a further 26 runs. This included Wallace Wheaton taking two wickets in two balls, although the incoming Saints’ batsman successfully defended the next ball to deny a hat-trick.
Wallace did finish as the best of the bowlers with 3 wickets for 17 runs off six overs, and Darcy Bullen (2 for 13) and Liam Albrecht (2 for 1) were the other multiple wicket-takers in the innings. Lochie Hahne and Jack Crowhurst took one each.
Chasing a target of 102 off 40 overs for their third win of the season, the Warriors had a shaky start, being 2 for 18 at one stage, but 30 runs by Wheaton in a third-wicket partnership on 51 with Liam Albrecht and an unfinished partnership of 41 between Jarryd Dahlenburg (9 not out) and Albrecht who finish the game on 52 not out, saw them pass the target in the 23rd over with 7 wickets in hand.
Next week the C grade Warriors will face their biggest challenge for the season so far when they host Horsham Saints Black, the only other undefeated team in this division, on Davis Park, and after a bye this week, the A grade team will travel to Noradjuah next Saturday to take on the undefeated Noradjuha-Toolondo Bullants.
