The West Wimmera Warriors defeated the competition-leading Noradjuha-Toolondo Bullants in the final round to confirm a place in the Horsham Cricket Association A grade semi-finals next Saturday, and the C grade Warriors completed the perfect preparation for their upcoming finals campaign, with a 200 run win.

A Grade

West Wimmera Warriors 9/167 (M Dahlenburg 78) defeated Noradjuha-Toolondo Bullants 140 (L Smith 3/22, A Smith 2/23, A Merrett 2/35)

The Warriors went into their round fifteen match in fourth place on the ladder, three points ahead of Jung Tigers who were guaranteed six points for the bye, needing to become only the second team to defeat the Bullants this season if they were to earn a place in the semi-finals.

With the chance of some rain during the afternoon, the Warriors’ captain, Mitch Dahlenburg, chose to set the tempo and elected to bat first upon winning the toss, backing his batters to set a challenging target and bowlers defend it.

Leading from the top, Dahlenburg opened the innings and made the inning-high score of 78, and although only four other batters passed into double figures, none made it to the twenties, but the scoring rate was brisk enough for them to finish with 167 from 40 overs, for the loss of nine wickets.

An early wicket slowed the Bullants’ run chase, and in their effort to keep up with the required run-rate, wickets fell regularly, and although they made it to the last over of the match, they were 27 runs short of the target when the final wicket fell.

Luke Smith took three wickets, and Austin Smith and Austin Merrett took two each.

After a slow start to their season, the Warriors are showing some good form at the right time, as they look towards travelling to Horsham again on Saturday to play the same opponent on the same ground for a place in the grand final, they will do so with some confidence.

The other semi-final will feature Homers and Rupanyup-Minyip on the Dimboola Recreation Reserve.

West Wimmera Warriors 323 (W Wheaton 56, C Cardwell 50 not out, Brady Alexander 40, D Schneider 39, J Crowhurst 30, J Dahlenburg 27) defeated Horsham Saints Red 112 (J Crowhurst 5/16, T Marshall 2/13)

Having already ensured that they would finish on top of the ladder several weeks ago, the C grade Warriors didn’t take it easy in their last hit out before the finals when they hosted Horsham Saints Red on Davis Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors batted first and when their last batter was dismissed, on the second last ball of their innings, they had already amassed 323 runs courtesy of two scores above 50 and four others above twenty. The total also received a significant boost from 53 sundries, including 21 no balls.

Wallace Wheaton made 56, and Cody Cardwell remained not out on 50. Other significant scores came from the bats of Brady Alexander (40), Drew Schneider (39), Jack Crowhurst (30), and Jarryd Dahlenburg (27).

Saints Red’s reply lasted into the 34th over, but with sundries the highest score (30), and just one batter making over twenty, they only made 112, still 211 runs behind.

Crowhurst followed up his 30 with the bat, with five wickets for 16 runs, and Toby Marshall took two for 13.

Having finished on top of the ladder, the Warriors meet the fourth-placed Quantong in the semi-final on the Dimboola Road Oval in Horsham. The last time they met, back in round eight on Davis Park, the Warriors won by eight wickets.

In the other semi-final, Horsham Saints Black will take on Blackheath-Dimboola at Minyip.
