The latest round of the Wimmera Hockey Association season was hosted at Nhill’s Davis Park on Saturday, with several close results across all three competitions keeping interest in the race for places in the finals.
- Open -
The Kaniva Cobras and Warrack Hoops fought out the first drawn match in the Open competition this season in an intense game that could have gone either way until the end.
The Warrack Hoops’ took the early lead with two goals before quarter time, but this was not an accurate indication of the balance of play, as the Cobras had their fair share of the attack but were unable to get on the scorecard before halftime.
Their first goal came ten minutes into the third quarter, and the equaliser one minute into the last, and although chances were created at both ends of the field throughout the last fifteen minutes of play, both defences were up to the challenge, and the game ended in a two-all draw.
This result keeps the Cobras in second place on the ladder, but the Hoops have dropped one spot to fourth.
The Horsham Hurricanes-Dimboola Burras match was played at a hectic pace, with a total of six goals scored. One each had the scores level at quarter time, but a burst of two more by the Hurricanes before halftime saw them establish a match-winning lead by the long break.
Another goal each in the second half allowed the Hurricanes to not only win the game, but increase their goal difference from minus one to positive one, and rise to third on the ladder. The Burras remain in fifth place, a win and a half behind fourth, and with a poor goal difference that they will need to address over the next six rounds if they are to remain in the mix for the finals.
The clash between the ladder-leading Yanac Tigers and the sixth-placed Nhill Rangers was not as one-sided as their relative positions might have predicted. Although the Tigers won the match, the experienced Nhill defence kept them to just two goals, well below their average of four per match this season.
- Women -
In the Women’s competition, the Nhill Thunderbirds and Yanac also played out a draw in a game where one goal was scored in each quarter. Yanac took the early lead, but the Thunderbirds levelled the scores by halftime before moving ahead by three-quarter time. A goal from a penalty corner in the fourth period brought the score level again, and neither team could break this deadlock before the final whistle.
Kaniva remains on top of the ladder after defeating Warracknabeal, and the Horsham Jets had the bye.
- Under 16 -
In the Under 16 competition, the Yanac Warriors scored their seventh win from as many matches when they played the Nhill Leopards, and the Warrack Revengers slipped back into the top four after defeating the Kaniva Raiders in a very close and entertaining game.
