With just four rounds of the regular Wimmera Hockey Association season remaining, many teams have already locked in their places in the finals, but several still have some work to do if they are to extend their season into the playoffs, and there is still plenty of jostling to be done before the finishing order on all three competition ladders is confirmed.
Open
The two teams in each of the Open matches this week will be approaching the game from a different perspective. The Yanac Tigers and Warrack Hoops are both assured of a top two finish and will be looking to fine-tune their finals preparations, while their opponents, the Kaniva Cobras and Horsham Hurricanes, respectively, need several more wins each if they are to make it to the playoffs.
Kaniva fought hard in their one-goal loss to the Hoops last weekend and, on their home pitch, will put in a good performance, but may still not have the depth to overcome the competition-leading Tigers.
The Hurricanes will be rested after the bye, and as the team currently outside the top four, they need a win more than anyone else if they are to play finals. While they can look impressive when everything comes together, they can be disappointing when it doesn’t, and as they traditionally don’t tend to travel well, they may struggle to earn a much-needed win against the Hoops this week.
The two points the Nhill Rangers will get for the bye will be enough to keep them in the top four for another week, but they too will need several wins over the ensuing few rounds if they are to play finals.
Women
While the Dimboola Roos and Yanac are both locked in for the finals, they are still under pressure as they battle to claim the minor premiership, and third-placed Kaniva is still within range of sneaking into the top two if either of those above them falter.
Yanac can relieve some of this pressure with a win over Kaniva this week, and the Roos will face the other top four team, Nhill Thunderbirds, and while neither of these games will be a walk-over, the higher-ranked teams should prevail, but the lower two still have the opportunity to challenge the leaders.
There is nothing in relation to the premiership race hanging on the other match, with the Horsham Jets and Warracknabeal both out of the running for a top four finish, but a win for either would be a huge confidence boost towards the end of an underperforming season. Horsham have won their previous two encounters this season, but Warrack have shown some improvement over recent weeks and could score their first win for 2026 if the Jets don’t bring their best team.
Under 16
There is sure to be more movement among the top four teams in the Under 16 competition as they battle for prime positions heading into the finals.
The biggest game will be between the Kaniva Raiders and Yanac Warriors, where a Raider’s victory will keep them in with a real chance of a top two finish, and while Yanac cannot fall out of the fop for, a loss here would almost ensure that they finish fourth, but if they were to win, they would still be in the mix for the second chance in the finals.
This season has seen several unexpected results with the lower teams challenging the leaders, so despite the Dimboola Kangaroos and Horsham Bombers being out of contention for the finals, they can still influence the competition when playing at their best.
Recent form suggests that the Nhill Leopards should retain their hold on first place with a win over the Kangaroos, and even though the Bombers defeated the Warrack Revengers when they last met, the Warrack team has the better current form and should be victorious and remain in second place on the ladder.
