With just two more rounds of the Wimmera Hockey Association’s regular season remaining, ten of the twelve finalists across the three competitions are confirmed; however, there are still several stories to be played out before the semi-finals begin.

Women

The biggest one will be the battle for the Women’s minor premiership when Yanac and the Dimboola Roos clash at the 11 am timeslot on Saturday at Nhill’s Davis Park.

There has been nothing between these two all season, and they are currently in first and second places on the ladder respectively on the same points, and it was only a big win last weekend against a much weaker opponent that has allowed Yanac to establish a sizable gap in their goal differences.

A victor on Saturday will move four points ahead and almost certainly tie up the top spot, as they both play a team from outside the top four in the last round. If they were to tie, as they did back in round four, it would only be goal difference that would decide top spot, setting up two significant games in the last round.

The other two Women’s games have less riding on them, with certain finalists Kaniva and Nhill Thunderbirds taking on the Horsham Jets and Warracknabeal respectively, both of whom can no longer make the top four, but with nothing to lose, could challenge their more fancied opponents.

Open

The leaders in the Open competition, the Yanac Tigers, sit out this round with the bye, comfortable in the knowledge that they have already secured top spot and while the Warrack Hoops are assured of second place regardless of the result in their game against the Nhill Rangers, they will need a good performance in their last hit-out before the finals, as they have the bye in the last round. This contrasts with the Rangers’ motivation, which is to confirm their ticket to the finals with a win, making this a high-pressure game for both.

The Horsham Hurricanes’ season is on the line when they tackle the Kaniva Cobras. A Horsham win would see them replace their opponent in the top four, for a week anyway, and a loss would not quite close the door on their finals aspirations, but they would require an unlikely big win in the last round against the Tigers and rely on other favourable results.

Under 16

With plenty of movement still possible within the top four in the Under 16 competition, all games in this round could have a significant impact on the semi-final matchups.

The biggest game will see the Nhill Leopards attempt to lock in top spot against the Warrack Revengers. Despite a loss last week, if the Revengers can put their best team on the field, this one could easily go either way. A Revengers’ win would see them stay in the running to finish on top.

After a slow start to their season, the Kaniva Raiders have improved as the season has progressed but will not find the Horsham Bombers an easy opponent despite their lowly ladder position. When playing at their best, the Bombers can match any team in the competition, and while they can no longer reach the finals themselves, they can still have a significant influence on where those above them finish.

It will be similar when the Yanac Warriors meet the Dimboola Kangaroos. If victorious, the Warriors could rise as high as second, and even with a win, the Kangaroos will remain in fifth, but it would see the Warriors remain at the lower half of the top four.
