The first round of the Wimmera Hockey Association finals will be played at Kaniva this Saturday, with some teams playing for direct passage to their grand final and others fighting to stay in the race.

Most of this week’s matchups are between teams that have been very competitive against each other so far this season, so six entertaining matches are on offer, with any team having a realistic chance of victory, with the players each can put on the field on the day being significant to their chances.

The winners of each second semi-final will earn a week off and a place in the grand final, while the defeated team in the first semi-finals will be eliminated from the title race.

The Nhill Rangers will be playing finals for the first time in several seasons, and their confident display last Saturday to defeat the Cobras by six goals to three suggests that they are peaking at the right time and that this most recent result should overshadow their more even head-to-head results from earlier in the season.

While the Cobras have more finals experience, the Rangers bring impressive current form and deserve to be favourites.

The Hoops are the only team to have inflicted a defeat on the Tigers since 2019 with a one-goal win back in round five, and while their subsequent two meetings have been played up to the usual high standards that have been witnessed between these two teams over many seasons, the Tigers have bounced back from that rare defeat with victories in their next two meetings.

Considering their impressive record at this time of the year, it is difficult to tip against the Tigers in a final, and the Hoops will have to play at their very best if they are to repeat their success from earlier in the season.

Kaniva has spent much of this season as a clear third in the Women’s competition, just behind the dominant leaders, but comfortably ahead of the rest of the field, but since their comfortable win over the Thunderbirds in round two, the gap between these two has been closing, as has been reflected by draws in their most recent two meetings.

Kaniva has the better recent record in finals, but the ‘Birds’ determination will make this another match that could go either way.

Women - Second Semi-Final - Dimboola Roos v Yanac

Round 14 - Roos 4 defeated Yanac 3
These two teams have been fighting win for win and goal for goal all season, with Dimboola only gaining a small margin ahead of Yanac on the ladder with their narrow win when they met two weeks ago in round fourteen.

The Roos go into this game with the confidence of two victories and a draw against this opponent, but Yanac brings a wealth of finals experience, making this another intense and entertaining game that could go either way.

The top four teams in the Under 16 competition have been very even all season, with all having shown that they can beat all the others when playing at their best, making results in this division even harder to predict than any of the senior games.

All four teams have several leading top age players who regularly dominate their team play, so across all finals from the semi-finals this week to the grand final, the successful teams will be those whose next tier of players step up when needed.

With a win each and a draw, nothing is separating the Leopards and Warriors, and it will be the team that focuses more on their own play and less on the pressure of a final who will succeed.

Kaniva started their season slowly, only breaking into the top four in round five, but have shown steady improvement since and finished on top of the ladder after round fifteen, while the Revengers are a strong combination when they have their full squad to pick from but are vulnerable when missing key players.

If both field their best teams, the Revengers should be the stronger, but the enthusiasm of the young Raiders could easily see them earn the first place in the grand final.
