The Jeparit weir has reached the end of its operational life, and a petition has been created to urge the Victorian government to fund a long-term solution to protect this community asset for future generations.
When the petition closed on Monday, it had received 402 signatures.
Replacing the Weir is about more than infrastructure, it is about supporting the environment, recognising cultural history, strengthening the local economy, and maintaining a place that contributes to community wellbeing, mental health, and connection.

The Hindmarsh Shire has applied for $820,000 under the Australian Government’s Disaster Ready Fund for Detailed Design and Planning of the Jeparit Weir.

A gathering to show support for this project was recently held on site, which was attended by around fifty people, including representatives from the Jeparit Town Advisory Committee, Friends of Lake Hindmarsh, Hindmarsh Ski Club, Jeparit Angling Club, Wimmera Catchment Management Authority, Barengi Gadjin Land Council, Hindmarsh Shire Council, and the community.
Member for Lowan, Emma Kealy MP, has sponsored a Jeparit local community member’s petition for funding from the State Government to fully replace and upgrade the Jeparit Weir.

This petition is live on the Parliament of Victoria website, closing on Monday 31 August 2026.

The Jeparit weir plays an important role in the life of the local community, maintaining water in the weir pool even when Lake Hindmarsh is dry, supporting fishing, boating, skiing, enhancing the river precinct, which is a popular feature of Jeparit, and providing a boost for the local economy through visitors supporting local businesses.
