A grass fire caused minor damage in a paddock on the corner of Ellerman Street and Cemetery Road in Dimboola Wednesday afternoon.

Eight appliances attended the blaze, including Dimboola 1, Dimboola 2, Antwerp, Cannum, North Wimmera and Gerang, as well as two front-end loaders and Dimboola's new FCV ute.

The fire, which was reported at around 2.45pm, burned through the stubble in the paddock as well as a number of hay bales.

The blaze was classed as under control at 3pm, but some bales of hay continued to smoulder. Crews remained on scene for some time following this to separate and extinguish the bales.

Despite the strong winds and dusty conditions, crews were able to contain the fire to the property on the south-western corner of Ellerman Street and Cemetery Road.

The fire did spot across Ellerman Street, however quick action from the crews, and the fact that the paddock was fallow, prevented it spreading towards the Western Highway.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, with specialists from CFA District 17 and Victoria Police attending.

Today remains a day of Total Fire Ban for most of the state of Victoria, with both the Wimmera and Mallee having a severe fire danger rating for today.
