The Dimboola Memorial Secondary College will celebrate the centenary of its Soldiers Memorial Hall next month.

When communities across the country were deciding what type of memorial they would build to honour members of their community who served and sacrificed during the Great War, Dimboola chose to create a living memorial in the form of a Higher Elementary School.

While the school was proclaimed in 1921 and began teaching students in a building at the current primary school site, it moved into the purpose-built building in 1924.

A site on the hill overlooking the town, the Soldiers Memorial Hall was built where the large tablets containing the Honour Rolls, which record those locals who served and those who did not return, are located. Since then, another tablet has been added that honours those who died in service in World War II and later in Korea.

This significant milestone in the life of the school will be marked on Saturday May 25th, with school tours and afternoon tea from 1.30 pm, followed by a short commemorative service at 3.30 pm, led by the state RSL President, Dr Robert Webster OAM.

In the evening, a formal dinner will be held in the Assembly Hall, which will include speeches by the Principal, Mrs Sally Klinge, the College Captains, Katie Griffiths and Will Thomson, and student representatives.

Bookings for both parts of the day will remain open until midnight on May 5th.
