Three projects from Dimboola have been included in the Pick My Project community grants initiative, with an Open Community Arts and Reflection Space for the former Dimboola Hotel site, a pedestrian bridge as part of the Nine Creeks walking track and the construction of a multi-use hard stand area within the Dimboola Recreation Reserve.

The nearby communities of Pimpinio, Jeparit, Nhill, Warracknabeal, Horsham and Natimuk have also had projects make the short list.

As part of this scheme, residents are encouraged to vote for up to three of their preferred projects, with voting only open to those living within 50 kilometres of the project.

Voting opened last week and will close at 5 pm, on Monday 17 September 2018, with the successful projects announced in the weeks following the close of voting.

Eligible voters need to be a Victorian resident, be aged 16 or older and register for account on the Pick My Project website.

Dimboola Projects -

Construction of a creek crossing pedestrian bridge for walking tracks

This project will construct a purpose built pedestrian bridge to cross a creek on the Nine Creeks Walking Tracks.

The Nine Creeks Walking Track project features approximately 5km of all weather walking tracks and this project will see the construction of a pedestrian bridge to cross one of the creeks that can at times be slippery and dangerous to users. The new bridge will significantly increase safety to all users irrespective of their ability.

The walking tracks are well utilised by local residents and visitors to Dimboola and provide a unique environmental and heritage experience whilst improving fitness and wellbeing.

The Nine Creeks Walking tracks were constructed by Dimboola residents as a community project to link the Business District, Wimmera River, Recreation Reserve and Riverside Holiday Park.

Accessibility from various points in Dimboola provides opportunities for a broad range of demographics to utilise them.

The construction of a pedestrian bridge over the creek will significantly improve safety for all users but particularly cyclists, parents pushing prams, and people in mobility scooters.

The bridge will enable all users to access the full length of track rather than those sections that do not require the traversing of the steep creek bed.

A community space for connection, reflection and culture

The Dimboola Hotel was decimated by fire in October 2003 and after a long standing legal issue to resolve what should happen to the remaining façade, it was eventually fully demolished in 2014.

This left a vacant block in a prominent position within the central business district of the town that holds great potential for revitalising the area.

The aim of this project is to create a sustainable space that locals can be proud of, tourists can admire and where creative people can display their talents.

The inherent human need for connection, whether professional or social, fuels the dynamic seen as the future focus of this community project, and with its position in the heart of the town this project holds immense social and economic value.

Its position is a visual promotion for Dimboola to tourists and people wishing to live here, and it stands to be the foundations for the reuniting and rejuvenation of our community.

This community need to embrace this space and allow it to engage different demographics, ages, genders, cultures and beliefs to a place of connection and understanding.

Construction of multi-use hard stand within Dimboola Recreation Reserve

This project will see the construction of a multi-use hard stand within the Dimboola Recreation Reserve that will be utilised by various organisations for numerous events and activities including -

  • As a warm up area by Dimboola and visiting netball teams prior to matches commencing - at present both teams are forced to warm up on the Recreation Reserve through road.
  • As the main pit stop area during Human Powered Vehicle races, exhibitions and practice. These HPV events use the road as the race track.
  • By the Dimboola A and P Society for static displays and exhibitions as part of the annual Agricultural Show.

The hard stand area will be an asset to the broader Dimboola and regional community as it will provide additional infrastructure within the Dimboola Recreation Reserve, considered as one of the best within the region.

It will significantly improve the safety of netball players as it will be used as their warm up area prior to matches. Currently they are forced to warm up on the main through road.

The Dimboola Recreation Reserve is considered a perfect location for Human Powered Vehicle races. Increased use from these events will provide an economic boost to businesses in Dimboola and community organisations
