A new era for cricket will commence this weekend when senior teams take the field for the first time representing the West Wimmera Warriors in the A and B grade competitions of the Horsham Cricket Association.

These two teams will fill the void left after the West Wimmera Cricket Association went into recess earlier this year after over 80 years of competition. Players will be drawn from the Nhill, Jeparit and Rainbow areas, replacing the last five clubs in the old Association; Jeparit, Kiata, Nhill Tigers, Rainbow and Winiam.

The Warriors will be one of six teams contesting the A grade, along with Homers, Horsham Saints, Jung Tigers, Laharum and Rupanyup-Minyip and will play their home games at Davis Park in Nhill.

The B grade team will be based at Sir Robert Menzies Park in Jeparit and will take on Blackheath-Dimboola, Noradjuha-Toolondo Bullants, Colts, Horsham Saints, Lubeck-Murtoa and Quantong.

Both teams open their 2018/19 season this Saturday at home, with the A grade team taking on Homers and the B grade team to host Colts.

A junior team representing the West Wimmera has been playing in the Horsham Junior Cricket Association Under 16 competition for over twenty seasons and has won nine premierships since 1998.

Blackheath-Dimboola

The Blackheath-Dimboola Cricket Club will go into this season with two senior teams, competing in the B and C grade competitions.

This weekend the B grade will travel to Noradjuha to take on the Bullants and the C grade will commence next weekend against Homers at the Holy Trinity Lutheran College oval in Horsham.

The exact structure of the underage competitions is yet to be confirmed, but they are not scheduled to start their season for another couple of weeks.
