Sports grounds and courts around the Wimmera will be quiet for another weekend.

The Wimmera Football Netball League, Horsham District Football Netball League, and the Wimmera Hockey Association are amongst the local sporting organisations that have postponed their competitions for another weekend, despite restrictions being relaxed last night.

This comes after all community sport had to be postponed last weekend due to the state-wide lockdown.

Junior sports competitions can resume from today, but seniors can only train but not engage in competition, but confusion over other restrictions such as density limits made conducting competitions impractical.

The Wimmera Football Netball League announced late yesterday that “Unfortunately, WFNL Junior Competition will not resume this weekend. Given the short timelines, capacity limits in place and with some information still pending from stakeholders, it’s simply not practical.”

Officials from these organisations are now investigating the options they have to reschedule these matches later in the season, with announcements to be made after they have had the opportunity to consider any limitations posed by the new restrictions, along with logistical issues of altering the scheduling of rounds at relatively short notice, such as factors such as ground availability.

With the upcoming Queen’s Birthday weekend in June a popular time for country championship competitions to be held, the uncertainty has led to several postponements at this level also.

These include Hockey Victoria’s Senior Country Championships that were to be held at Geelong and Footscray, and Netball Victoria’s Association Championships scheduled for Sunday 6th June in Bendigo.
