Round 2 of the Australian Government’s Regional Airports Program will fund upgrades at the Nhill and Horsham airports, among others across north-western Victoria.

Dr Anne Webster, Member for Mallee, said that Swan Hill, Hopetoun, Horsham, Nhill and Mildura airports all received funding under this round allowing them to undertake necessary safety and serviceability upgrades.

At Nhill, $200,000 will go towards the installation of PAPI (precision approach path indicators), lights and wind socks, as well as the construction of a concrete hard stand for firebombing aircraft and the replacement of a water tank.

$285,750 will fund the reconstruction of apron paving at Horsham.

Security and animal-proof fencing and access gateways will be upgraded at Hopetoun, while Mildura will upgrade a runway, taxiway, and windsock lighting.

Stage 2 of the Swan Hill Regional airport has also been funded, which will seal the runway, taxiway and apron area, install aircraft monitoring and counting systems as well as runway and apron lighting.

“For our regional communities, the local airport provides an essential link to the rest of Australia,” the Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, also the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, said.

“That’s why we’ve committed $100 million over four years from 2019–20 to 2022–23 to help owners of regional airports right across Australia deliver upgrades to improve runway and taxiway pavements, install new lighting or fencing.”
