The long-awaited replacement of the Albacutya bridge has been delayed.

Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, the Albacutya Bridge construction project is on hold until restrictions are lifted for construction workers.

Hindmarsh Shire Mayor Cr Ron Ismay said “whilst the delays are disappointing, it is yet another reminder as to the importance of getting vaccinated so that community projects can be completed in a timely and safe manner and reduce the COVID-19 exposure risk to our Hindmarsh Shire residents”.

The contract to build the new bridge was awarded in June this year, following an announcement of Federal funding this time last year, and State Funding for the project in August 2017.

This 100-year-old single lane structure is to be replaced with a new two-lane bridge over Outlet Creek north-west of Rainbow, and a 1.2 kilometre narrow stretch of the Albacutya Road will be widened to make this heavily used truck route safer for all road users.
