The Spring firewood collection season commences today in the Grampians region, allowing firewood to be gathered from designated firewood collection areas in State forests for personal use.

Storms last year and earlier this year have created an opportunity to make more wood available, and there will be 26 collection sites available in state forests across the Grampians region, with four sites for green firewood only in the Wimmera District, including Brynterion Plantation, Barrett - Dogwood Road, Wail - Broken Dam, and Stawell - Navarre Road.

Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) Grampians Deputy Chief Fire Officer Tony English said, “The availability of firewood will be a great benefit to the community, particularly in areas where the storms have hit,

“We’ve been working collaboratively with other agencies in storm-impacted areas, which includes local councils and Parks Victoria, to clear the area of fallen trees and make firewood available to the community.

“While there will be more firewood available this season due to the 2021 storms, it is still important that people do the right thing and stick to the collection limits of two cubic metres per person per day and a maximum of 16 cubic metres per household per financial year.

“Authorised officers will be patrolling parks, forests and reserves to ensure that people are not breaking the rules.

“We also ask everyone to please be mindful of their safety in the forest.

“Some parts of the Grampians region have experienced increased rainfall over the past few months, so if you’re planning to collect firewood, please ensure you check the weather before heading out.

“Please avoid collecting firewood during or immediately after heavy rainfall for your own safety and to ensure that your car doesn’t become bogged due to muddy tracks.”
