Rainbow’s unique entry into the Silo Art Trail incorporating the redevelopment of the Llew Schilling silo is progressing.

The development of one of Rainbow’s iconic buildings seeks to repurpose the one-hundred-year-old grain silo as an art installation with a viewing platform commanding views over the town and surrounding countryside and is intended that it will attract tourists from across the country who are visiting the region to take in the expanding Silo Art Trail.

The original design for the project was advertised for tender in the middle of the year, but it attracted limited interest, and submissions were costed significantly higher than the available budget, which was fully funded by the Victorian Government’s Tourism Infrastructure Program – Flagship Projects.

Consultation identified the complexity of construction within the existing century-old silo as an issue that limited interest and contributed significantly to the project’s cost, which was further impacted by unprecedented demand in the construction industry.

The revised plans incorporate an external structure adjoining the silo rather than the original internal modifications, allowing for a ‘greenfield construction’ project, drastically reducing the build’s complexity. It is hoped this will result in more interest in the project from contractors and allow construction to be completed within the available budget.

Tenders for the project close in mid-December.

Hindmarsh Shire Council will host a drop-in session from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday (17 November) at the Rainbow Library and Customer Service Centre to update interested community members.
This is a great opportunity for the community to drop by for a few minutes to look at the updated design for the Silo development. Council officers will be onsite to answer any questions you may have, so we welcome anyone who would like to come along and learn more about this project.

Once completed, Rainbow will join Albacutya and Arkona as other communities within the Hindmarsh Shire to feature silo art.

The original public announcement of this project came in November 2020, after being in the planning stage since 2018.
