Smoke may be visible near Gerang Gerung and from the Western Highway from a haystack fire near Antwerp.

Crews were called mid-morning to the fire on the Antwerp-Woorak Road and remain on scene at the time of writing.

The Country Fire Authority issued a Community Advice message at 11.46 am.

“Haystack fires are not likely to spread into grassland but do generate a lot of smoke.

“Smoke may be visible from nearby roads and communities as firefighters pull apart the hay to extinguish the fire.

Winds in the area are pushing the smoke towards the south.

“Visibility may be poor on surrounding roads, including the Western Highway near Gerang Gerung.”

Hindmarsh Shire Council has advised that Antwerp-Woorak Rd between Tullyvea Church Rd and Starick Rd is being closed due to visibility issues caused by the nearby haystack fire. Please plan for an alternative route as the road will remain closed until conditions improve.
