For the third morning in a row, the Bureau of Meteorology has issued a frost warning for the Wimmera.

The warning also covers the Mallee, Northern Country, North Central, , South West, Central, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts, while a Severe Frost Warning has been issued for Victoria’s North East.

Frosts with temperatures down to -2 degrees, and possibly as low as -4 degrees in the North East, are forecast for Wednesday morning in parts of these forecast districts.

Ground-level temperatures can be many degrees lower than those recorded by standard weather stations, especially in calm conditions with very clear skies.

This follows temperatures of -0.5°C recorded at Horsham this morning, -1.5°C yesterday, and -1.2°C on Sunday morning.

The forecast for tomorrow morning is -2°C.

For those who are prepared to brave these low temperatures, tonight has been forecast as another time when the Aurora Australis may be visible in the southern sky.

While this event is not likely to be as vivid as when it was widely reported back in May (below), the best time to view it could be soon after midnight tonight.
