Purple glass bin collections across the Hindmarsh Shire will change to 12-weekly from the current 8-weekly schedule later this year.

Council voted to modify the collection schedule at its meeting on Wednesday 18th June with an aim to optimise the efficiency of the service, after receiving community feedback and monitoring usage levels following the introduction of the Container Deposit Scheme.

A recent bin audit revealed that only 20% of purple glass bins are being presented for collection on scheduled nights. This low presentation rate suggests that the current 8-weekly frequency may be more often than many residents require.

Over two-thirds of respondents to the community feedback process indicated they do not put their purple glass bin out every eight weeks and believe a 12-weekly collection would provide sufficient capacity.

"We have listened to our community and reviewed the feedback data. It is clear that the service is not being utilised at its optimum level," Mr Ron Ismay said.

"This adjustment to a 12-weekly collection will ensure that we are using resources more efficiently while still providing a convenient and effective service for glass recycling."

The new 12-weekly collection schedule will take effect after the currently scheduled glass collection on 24th October 2025. The first collection under the new schedule will be 16th January 2026.

Residents will be informed of their new collection dates through Hindmarsh communication channels and new fridge magnet with new collection dates will be delivered to residents in the final quarter of 2025.

Service Issues
If any of your Council bin collections are not collected, or not emptied completely, you can report it to Council who will work with their contractor Wimmera Mallee Waste to organise a resolution.

Replacements for stolen, lost or damaged bins will be issued at the cost of the ratepayer. If you think your bin was damaged by the collection service and not a result of wear and tear, you can report this to Council too, by calling on 5391 4444, emailing info@hindmarsh.vic.gov.au, or visiting one of our Customer Service Centres.
