Preconstruction works on a major intersection at Horsham’s southern entrance are set to commence this month.
The intersection of the Western Highway, Henty Highway, Golf Course Road, and Plumpton Road is set to be upgraded with a new roundabout designed to improve safety, access, and traffic flow, provide improved travel times, efficiency for freight traffic, and access for local businesses, and safer and more accessible movements for pedestrians and cyclists.
This intersection forms one of Horsham’s key entrances and caters for 18,000 vehicles per day, of which nearly 20 per cent are heavy vehicles.
Between January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023, there were twelve crashes at or near this intersection, resulting in six serious injuries.
The Western and Henty Highways are essential routes for the farming industry, grain production, regional tourism, and manufacturing services, and Golf Course Road and Plumpton Road service one of Horsham’s key industrial zones.
With traffic volumes anticipated to increase due to population and industrial growth in the region, a new roundabout will be constructed to simplify the intersection, improve safety, and enhance efficiency for all road users.
The initial works will focus on service relocation and are expected to take until September and may occasionally require traffic management to allow the works to be undertaken safely.
The major works will include:- Earthworks
- Pavement, kerb and channel construction
- Realignment of the local roads to provide safer approach angles
- Construction of a shared path to provide safety crossing opportunities for pedestrians and cyclists
- Construction of a dedicated slip lane for southbound traffic on Western Highway
- Asphalting and line marking
- Public lighting and landscaping
